ITs inside everything
Adultification isn’t just social or cultural it’s structural. Institutions like schools, health care, and the criminal justice system often reflect and reinforce adultification bias, with very real harms.
In one experimental study, researchers found that when Black children, especially Black girls, were perceived as older than they are, adults were more likely to misinterpret their emotions (for example, seeing anger where none existed) and justify harsher disciplinary or punitive action. PubMed+1 In scenarios involving police intervention or force, adultified Black children were seen as more culpable and less deserving of protection or empathy.
This biased perception translates into concrete disparities. According to the report “Deservingness and Punishment in Juvenile Justice,” Black youth ,especially minors, are more likely to be transferred to adult courts than white youth of the same age for similar offenses. Office of Justice Programs+1 Once in the adult system, they face harsher penalties, limited leniency, and drastically reduced chances for rehabilitation — despite being children legally and developmentally.
The institutional impact is even more alarming for Black girls. A recent qualitative study involving Black female youth (ages 13–24) and caregivers found widespread experiences of adultification:
participants described being treated as more sexually advanced, less innocent, and more “knowledgable” about adult issues.
Caregivers expressed concern that this early stripping of childhood could lead to premature sexualization, mental health challenges, and exposure to punitive systems rather than supportive care.
Thus, adultification bias isn’t just a perception problem that is baked into the systems that are supposed to protect children. Schools discipline Black girls more harshly, health systems misdiagnose or neglect them, and the justice system criminalizes them all because they are seen as older, tougher, and less in need of care.
Too often you will see or hear black women express their discomfort with the healthcare system. Many feel it actively works against them. Where do they go if they don’t feel accepted anywhere. When the system said to help you is out to get you its creates and reinforces the hyper independence narrative and reality among those dealing with adultification.
